Rätten att söka sin egen lycka.

Har en liten amerikan uppstoppad i själen. En som ständigt tror på bättre tider. En som inte förstår jante.  Och som älskar den vackraste politiska texten som någonsin skrivit. Varför? Jo, jag älskar yttrandefrihet.

Tyvärr hittar jag ytterst få svenskar som förstår amerikaner. Svenskar ser svulstighet, arrogans och ignorans - där jag ser vänlighet och öppenhet. Jo, amerikaner är ofta sig själv nog. Lite dryga är de på det viset. Men hallå, det är ju faktiskt vi svenskar också. Det är som sagt lätt att se bjälkar i andras ögon.

Nå, till den vackra texten. Skriven under upplysningen:

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. Declaration of Independence

Det sägs att det i huvudsak är Thomas Jefferson som författat texten. En avskrift av hela engelska texten hittar du här.

Första stycket av texten förklarar varför texten finns, varför det är viktigt att argumenten till självständighet förklaras. Huvuddelen av texten är sedan själva argumenten, helt baserade på Upplysningens ideal om den enskilda människans rättigheter.

Sedan följer fakta om den brittiska kungens styre och till sist själva självständighetsförklaringen.

Blir ungefär: Vi anser att dessa sanningar vara självklara (inte exakt korrekt översatt self evident, men betydelsemässigt nära nog), att alla människor är skapta lika/jämställda och har fått med sig av sin Skapare vissa oavvisbara Rättigheter, bland dem rätten till Liv, rätten till Frihet och rätten att söka sin egen Lycka.

... it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security  ... det är deras rätt, det är deras skyldighet, att göra sig av med en sådan regering och att ordna nya beskyddare av deras framtida säkerhet.

Wow. Ett vackert språk. Stolt, revolutionärt, men ändå statsbärande.

Vad många svenskar inte förstår, är att denna text (skriven i upplysningstid), är själva kärnan i den ideologi som än idag styr amerikanare. Den som säger med fullständig självklarhet "Vi har ett eget ansvar för vår säkerhet." Samtidigt som jämställdhet och frihet är grundläggande stöttepelare.

USA idag har stundtals tappat bort en del av idealen, men de finns där ändå. Gränsen mellan imperalism och att stödja frihetskamp över hela världen är suddig. Och märkbart ofta är USA-politiken kantad av något ljusskygga ekonomiska motiv. Men ändå, ideologin finns där. Och den är fastlagd i "Declaration of Independece", som i sin tur är baserad på frihetsidealen under Upplysningen. 
Franske 1700-talsförfattaren Voltaire påstås ha sagt så här (fast egentligen finns inga konkreta bevis för yttrandet eller citatet): 
Monsieur l'abbé, je déteste ce que vous écrivez, mais je donnerai ma vie pour que vous puissiez continuer à écrire. 
Vilket ungefär betyder. Jag avskyr det som ni skriver, men jag skulle kunna ge mitt liv för att ni ska ha rätten att fortsätta skriva.

Yttrandefrihet. Också ett av världens vackraste ord. Eller hur?
